Asian stocks rise, with Japan and South Korea leading gains

Nikkei 225 gained over 2%, the broader TOPIX added nearly 0.7%, while KOSPI jumped nearly 0.7%

Asian stocks mostly rose on Monday, with Japan and South Korea leading gains as markets extended a rebound.

Nikkei 225 gained over 2%, while the broader TOPIX added nearly 0.7%.

Kioxia added around 0.5%, LARGAN Precision rose almost 1.7%, while TDK and Sony gained more than 1% each.

KOSPI jumped nearly 0.7%, after adding over 2% earlier in the session, with SK Hynix up more than 1.5% and Samsung Electronics adding around 0.4%.

The gains followed a bruising week for Asian chip stocks, as investors reassessed the sustainability of the AI-driven rally and valuations across the semiconductor sector.

Mainland Chinese stocks were mixed. The Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 slid around 0.2%, while the Shanghai Composite added almost 0.4%.

China’s technology sector was also mixed. Alibaba advanced more than 2%, while Foxconn Industrial Internet gained around 1.7% and NAURA Technology rose more than 1%. BOE Technology slipped around 3%, while Cambricon Technologies plunged more than 5%. Hang Seng gained nearly 0.7%.

S&P/ASX 200 dropped around 0.3%, giving back some of Friday’s gains. Lithium stocks bucked the broader weakness, with European Lithium gaining almost 6%, and Global Lithium Resources adding more than 5%.

Treasury Wine Estates climbed more than 4%, reaching its highest level since December 9, 2025. The stock added 7.9% earlier in the session.

Nifty 50 gained 0.1% after opening for trade.

FTSE Straits Times Singapore was closed on Monday for the National Day public holiday.

Oil prices firmed as investors reassessed the prospects for a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said a deal with Oman to define new shipping lanes was in its final stages but maintained that the waterway would only reopen after the U.S. met additional conditions.
