Bitcoin drops below $30,000 amid economic concerns

Bitcoin dropped over 3.3 per cent to $29,478.54, dropping below the key $30k it reached previous week for the first time since June

Crypto currencies dropped on Monday as investors put Ethereum’s “Shapella” upgrade behind them and turned their focus to forthcoming bank earnings and recession concerns.

Bitcoin dropped over 3.3 per cent to $29,478.54, as per Coin Metrics, dropping below the key $30k it reached previous week for the first time since June. In the meantime, it was down by 2.4 per cent but maintained the $2k it breached through past week.

Crypto is coming off a winning week in which prices were uplifted by hopes around Ethereum’s most recent tech upgrade, known as “Shapella” or “Shanghai”. The update is intended to bring more liquidity to the network by permitting “locked up” ether to be withdrawn and eventually attract more institutional interest over the long term.

For the week, bitcoin gained 8 per cent, while ether rose 12 per cent.

This week, it would not be surprising to see a slight correction in prices, as per Yuya Hasegawa, crypto market analyst at Bitbank, and there could be some selling pressure as some investors may want to take profits from the previous week.

While crypto was rallying, Friday’s U.S. stock market showed unsteady movements as stronger-than-expected consumer sentiment and Fed’s Waller’s speech reinforced the likelihood of another rate hike in May, he stated.

But, the Fed Funds futures market has already priced in over 80 per cent probability of a 25 basis point hike in May, therefore pressures from macro factors on bitcoin’s price is anticipated to be restricted.

Crypto investors are looking ahead to bank earnings due this week for further insight about the health of the sector and likelihood of a coming recession. A number of Fed officials are set to speak this week as well.
