Bitcoin now makes up around 50% of $1 trillion crypto market

Bitcoin now makes up just below half of the $1 trillion crypto market, according to data from CoinGecko.

In January, Bitcoin’s market share sat at around 38%, as per Bloomberg, but it has since climbed to 48.5% as investors have fled some alternative coins in favour of the perceived safety of the world’s biggest crypto currency.

The ongoing trial of former FTX Chief Executive Officer Sam Bankman-Fried has attracted attention to the drawbacks of bad actors in the crypto industry, but it has not prevented investors from slowly putting more money into digital assets, which could see even greater investor interest because of growing geopolitical risk.

Nearly $78 million poured into digital asset investment products last week, the biggest inflows since July, as per a report from CoinShares. Bitcoin received the majority of that investment, with $43 million in inflows over the week.

However, Ether, the next most popular crypto currency, saw lacklustre investment last week, as per CoinShares, even as six futures-based Ethereum exchange-traded funds launched in the U.S. In total, the new exchange-traded funds brought in just $10 million from investors. Ether’s market dominance has also dropped to nearly 17% from 19% in January.

In comparison, the first Bitcoin futures exchange-traded funds—launched in the U.S. in 2021—raked in $1 billion, although the CoinShares report observed that investor interest in digital currencies was much higher at that time compared to now.

A bright spot for altcoins last week was inflows to Solana, a coin that was heavily endorsed by SBF. The crypto currency experienced its highest weekly inflows since March last year, at $24 million, as per CoinShares.

Bitcoin and Ether were both down less than 1% on Tuesday afternoon. Bitcoin was trading near $27,300 and Ether near $1,500, according to CoinGecko.
