Bitcoin’s 2023 rebound continued after stopping near $30k

The biggest digital currency increased as much as 3.5 per cent to $30,478, after tumbling 3 per cent a day prior in its worst decline since March 9

Bitcoin’s 2023 bounce back has continued after stopping around the closely watched $30k mark, in spite of the latest US crypto clampdown and a more steady evaluation of the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy.

The biggest digital currency increased as much as 3.5 per cent to $30,478 on Tuesday in New York, after tumbling 3 per cent a day prior in its worst decline since March 9. Ether as well as an index of the leading 100 digital assets also rose.

Global equities were mostly higher as indications of a Chinese economic rebound aided markets look beyond patchy US company earnings and the likelihood of more central bank policy tightening.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday continued with its crackdown on the crypto sector, stating that Bittrex Inc. breached the agency’s rules for years. Increasing regulatory action and cooling expectations for consequent Fed interest rate cuts dampened investor fervour.

Recent economic data have helped to strengthen speculations on a quarter-point Fed rate hike in May while tempering predictions for consequent policy easing.

Bitcoin may retreat toward $27k if the market continues to take out some of the 60bp or so of rate cuts still priced into year-end, stated Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG Australia Pty.

Bitcoin has climbed 80 per cent in 2023, exceeding an 8 per cent jump in global stocks, as crypto markets partially bounced back from 2022’s crash.

But digital asset bankruptcies and scandals, especially the collapse of FTX, continues to affect the sector.

In its lawsuit against Bittrex, the Securities and Exchange Commission underlined six tokens as examples of cryptoasset securities that were available for trading on company’s platform: OMG Network (OMG), Dash (DASH), Algorand (ALGO), Monolith (TKN), Naga (NGC) and IHT Real Estate Protocol (IHT).
