Ether’s rally knocks bitcoin dominance from 21-month high

Bitcoin’s dominance rate increased to as high as 49.06 per cent early Wednesday before pulling back to 48.12 per cent as ether’s price increased

Ether’s (ETH) fresh rally above $2k following the successful Shanghai upgrade late Wednesday, reduced bitcoin’s (BTC) dominance from nearly two-year record high, as per TradingView data.

Bitcoin’s dominance rate increased to as high as 49.06 per cent early Wednesday, as per TradingView data, before pulling back to 48.12 per cent as ether’s price increased. The last time the metric was near the 49 per cent level was in July 2021, around 21 months ago, according to TradingView.

Ether’s dominance, on the other hand, soared to 19.87 per cent on Thursday, marking a one-month high.

The bitcoin dominance rate is the bitcoin market capitalization’s share of the total crypto currency market cap. The metric is important to evaluate the relative strength of bitcoin, the biggest crypto currency in terms of market value, compared to the wider crypto market, or identify times when altcoins outperform, also known as an altcoin season. Ether’s dominance, likewise, shows the second biggest crypto currency’s relative value to the crypto market.

Ether’s improved performance has lessened bitcoin’s share of the crypto market. The shift has come following the Ethereum network’s long-awaited tech upgrade, also known as Shanghai upgrade or Shapella, was deployed without any issues late Wednesday.

The upgrade allowed the withdrawal of over 17.4mln of staked tokens, worth around $35bln, from Ethereum’s proof-of-stake blockchain for the first time since its launch in December 2020. Its successful deployment removed a little but concerning risk that ether investors might not be able to claim back their tokens locked up in staking contracts.

Ether increased as much as $2,023 on Thursday, advancing 5 per cent during the last 24 hours, as per CoinDesk data, leading the rise of the wider crypto prices.

Bitcoin, which also responded positively to the upgrade, is just 1.5 per cent higher through the day, lagging behind altcoins.
