Google Code Next seeks diversity in tech, opens Fruitvale office

by Jonathan Adams

Google has always changed the face of technology. This time it is doing it again. “We need more African American and Latino computer scientists in America, in Oakland,” says Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

To make it happen Google created its Code Next program. Google dedicated funds to open an office in Oakland’s Fruitvale District.

The 1,500 square-foot lab is where students are taught coding, 3-D printing and other skills, which students say they don’t get in their regular classes.

The free program is in its pilot stage. It allows 70 9th grade students to come in after school for two hours a day.
