The shop will be there for two more weeks before it shuts its doors for the final time on May 3
Town centre bosses have lamented the ‘sadness’ over the closure of a national chain on the high street. Poundland, on Dalton Road, Barrow, has announced it will soon cease trading.
The wallet-friendly shop will be there for two more weeks before it shuts its doors for the final time on May 3 after they were ‘unable’ to renew the lease.
Colin Garnett, the manager of Barrow’s Business Improvement District, has expressed his disappointment over the impending closure of the store.
He said: I hope they are able to find a resolution as it is sad to lose the town centre store.
Shoppers have reacted in a similar way, expressing surprise that the usually busy store is closing its doors – and worrying what it could mean for other businesses.
Just last week, Steals announced its closure on nearby Portland Walk after less than three months of operation.
The centrally-located shop will be open for just two more weeks before shutting its doors for the final time.
Shoppers said they would rather visit Preston, Lancaster or Blackpool to do their shopping.
However, it won’t be the end for shoppers who love the retailer. Poundland has stressed that the store on Hindpool Retail Park will remain open.
It is not clear what will happen to the staff currently working at the store.
A spokesman for the high street giant said: We’re sorry to say that our Poundland store on Dalton Road in Barrow will close on May 3.
Sadly, our lease on the premises is expiring and we’ve been unable to renew it, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said: We’re still offering customers amazing value at our nearby store at Barrow Retail Park. It goes without saying that when we have to close a store we always work hard to look after colleagues directly affected.
