Commuters on the Circle, District and Central lines faced major delays this morning after reports a person was hit by a train while a signal failure caused travel chaos.
There was no service between Liverpool Street and Leytonstone on the Central line after reports of a person under a train at Stratford.
A number of emergency services vehicles were pressed into service, while commuters said the station was evacuated.
Although the line later reopened, there were still severe delays following the incident.
Meanwhile, an earlier signal problem at Edgware Road meant there was no District line service at all between that station and High Street Kensington.
Transport for London said the signal problems broke out at 5.30am and were fixed around two hours later.
However, delays were still reported on the District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith and City lines while services struggled to return to normal.
A spokesman said: “We apologise to our customers who have experienced delays on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines this morning.
“The delays were caused by a signal failure at Edgware Road.”
